The Canadian Society of Medical Evaluators (CSME) and the Canadian Academy of Psychologists in Disability Assessment (CAPDA) are pleased to announce our 2020 Certification in Catastrophic Impairment Evaluation Course. Since its inception, this program has been widely acknowledged as the leading program in Ontario uniquely structured to cover all-important skills and legislation required for clinicians to participate in the Ontario Catastrophic Impairment determination process in accordance with the Ontario Statutory Accident Benefits Schedule (SABS). The Certification in Catastrophic Impairment Evaluation Course addresses the legislation from the perspective of all clinicians, including Physical medicine, mental behavioral and allied health professionals. Our expert legal facilitators will also analyze recent case law and present upcoming trends and practical skills for clinicians preparing testimony relating to catastrophic cases.

TRAINING COURSE GOAL:
The purpose of the Certification in Catastrophic Impairment Evaluation Course is to harmonize and improve quality standards for competent, independent practice as a medical expert within the specific area of Ontario Catastrophic determinations. This program assesses the minimal competencies necessary to practice as a medical legal expert in this field. This program is intended to be complementary to national standards of competence within a specific health care specialty, and enhance the competent, ethical, and professional practice as a medicolegal expert. The Certification in Catastrophic Impairment Evaluation Course is not intended to replace any existing College or Board regulatory functions, but rather to augment those processes. The vision for the Certification in Catastrophic Impairment Evaluation Course is to be recognized as the standard of quality for medicolegal experts undertaking these evaluations in accordance with Ontario law.

CLINICAL SKILLS TRAINING
Participants will survey the eight key criteria listed in the SABS for motor vehicle accidents in Ontario. The session will cover both the current framework, required for accidents on or after June 1, 2016, as well as impairment rating models required for accidents here prior. It is designed for a wide range of professionals including lawyers, insurers, and quality assurance personnel, triers of fact, and assessors who conduct catastrophic determination examinations.

C-CAT MENTAL BEHAVIORAL TRACK
Provides participants advanced in-depth training on impairment rating as it pertains to the formal evaluation of mental/behavioral and neuro-cognitive/behavioral conditions specific to the pre and post 2016 SABS catastrophic criteria of 4, 5, 7 and 8.

This is designed for clinicians including psychiatrists, clinical and rehabilitation psychologists, neuro-psychologists and occupational therapists that are seeking comprehensive training in the assessment of these specific aspects of the catastrophic determination purposes.

C-CAT PHYSICAL TRACK
This comprehensive course covers all elements of the AMA Guides to the Evaluation of Permanent Impairment 4th Edition required for physical assessors to proficiently address the Ontario SABS Catastrophic criteria. Full instruction including in-depth case example review will be presented for all core modules covering the evaluation of the upper extremity, spine, lower extremity, central nervous system impairment, and all other specialized topics.
