Whiplash Associated Disorders

The Bone and Joint Decade (2000–2010) Task Force on Neck Pain and Its Associated Disorders has released its findings in the February 2008 issue of the journal Spine. This conference will be examining the historical impact of the original Quebec Task Force, with several members of the original and most-recent task force presenting their findings and the impact that these findings will have on various types of medical practices, as well as other disciplines and specialties.

As an organization accredited to sponsor continuing medical education for physicians by the Committee on Accreditation of Canadian Medical Schools (CACMS), the UBC Division of Continuing Professional Development designates this educational program as meeting the accreditation criteria of the College of Family Physicians of Canada for up to 7.75 Mainpro-M1 credits. This program is an Accredited Group Learning Activity (Section 1) as defined by the Maintenance of Certification program of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada. This program has been reviewed and approved by UBC Division of Continuing Professional Development. Each physician should claim only those credits he/she actually spent in the activity.

Update on the Quebec Task Force

  • The original Quebec Task Force publication released in 1995 is seen as a ground breaking document with respect to whiplash-associated Disorders.
  • The original Quebec Task Force was fundamental in establishing governmental policy and treatment guidelines regarding whiplash.
  • In February 2008, the entire supplemental issue of the journal Spine was dedicated to updating the original work of the Quebec Task Force. Each attendee will be receiving a copy as a part of the registration fees.
  • Dr. J. David Cassidy from Toronto was one of the original authors of the Quebec Task Force in 1995. Along with Dr. Cassidy, three major researchers who contributed to the recent update will be presenting their findings.
  • Government and industry policy makers will be present at the conference.
  • The major treatment professions currently involved with whiplash disorders will present their disciplines perspective on the update at the conference.
  • This update is likely to have a significant impact on the policies and treatment guidelines associated with Whiplash disorders in the future similar to the original 1995 Quebec Task Force findings.
